‘Owns £5,000 And Lots Of Land’: Vintage Maltese Bachelor Ad Looking For Wife Unearthed

A vintage advert from a Maltese bachelor seeking a Maltese wife has been unearthed on social media, showcasing how things were done nearly a century ago.
“Carmelo Micallef, 30 years old from Rabat, Malta, who lives in North Queensland, Australia, and who possesses lots of land and capital amounting to £5,000 wants to find a Maltese woman that speaks English to marry her,” the advert, shared by the National Archives of Malta, begins.
“He is ready to cover all costs to travel from Malta to Australia,” it continued, before sharing his address.
The advert was originally published in the newspaper Il-Berqa (The Flash) 85 years ago, in August, 1937. The advert is accompanied by an image of Carmelo himself, standing proud and looking into the camera while wearing his Sunday best.
People couldn’t help but react to this blast from the past.
Many noted the hard work that Maltese migrants had to undertake when carving out a new life in Australia, with one person even pointing out Carmelo’s location of North Queensland.
“I have been to the area this man was from. In those days, sugarcane work was back breaking and arduous no time for a normal life or to meet anyone as it was in the middle of nowhere,” they recounted.
“Poisonous snakes, cyclones and scorching sun. Even the eventual bride had to work so hard in those days. You would look 20 years older in 10 years. They used to write to their local parish priest in Malta or Gozo to find them a suitable woman to marry help and raise a family.”
Others couldn’t help but notice how much older the 30-year-old looked, with one person saying he looked like he was around 50 years old in that photo.
Over and above everything though, we just have one question: did a Maltese woman ever answer Carmelo’s call and travel to the other side of the planet just to be with him?
