PA Turns Down Permit Request For Outdoor Illegal Structures At Il-Fortizza In Sliema

The Planning Commission has rejected a planning application that sought development permission for a series of outdoor illegal structures surrounding the iconic historical building, il-Fortizza, located along the Sliema Seafront.

The decision was made due to concerns that the existing illegal structures, along with the proposed addition of a larger external dining area, would significantly alter the external appearance of this Grade 1 protected building and diminish its historical value.

The Planning Authority had previously granted permission in 2001 solely for the roofing of the existing terrace using a demountable lightweight structure.

The Commission emphasised that the proposed structures, in conjunction with the existing illegalities on the site, would create visual clutter and deviate from the policy governing this area.

The policy stipulates that only minor extensions and consolidation of existing buildings are permitted, thereby preserving the historical integrity of the surroundings. The Commission’s decision aims to uphold this policy and safeguard the historical and architectural significance of il-Fortizza.

Il-Fortizza, a British artillery battery, was designated as a Grade 1 building by the Planning Authority in 1995. Recognising its importance, the Authority also established a buffer zone around the fort in 2018, further enhancing its protection and preservation.

The decision to reject the permit request serves as a reminder that the preservation of historical landmarks should be a priority for both the authorities and the community. Historical buildings are not only tangible links to our past, but they also contribute to the cultural identity and heritage of a nation.

The Planning Authority encourages property owners and developers to collaborate with the relevant authorities to ensure that any proposed developments adhere to the established regulations and guidelines. By doing so, we can protect our historical treasures for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
