Parents Must Raise Their Kids Right, Robert Abela Urges After Unprovoked Valletta Gang Assault

Malta’s Prime Minister has called on parents to raise their children with the correct morals and values following at least four minors being targeted and assaulted by a “roaming gang” of youths in Valletta.

Saying that for years Valletta has struggled with “pockets” of youths who attack people unprovoked, Robert Abela noted that even if the government were to double the number of police officers on the streets, these incidents would continue to happen.

“This is a phenomenon we have seen for years, where these pockets of individuals create incidents for no reason at all,” Abela said today.

He condemned the attack on youths that were “minding their own business”.

“Why this kind of attitude? This is where I appeal for responsibility in raising youths. As a parent, I’m responsible for instilling the right values into my daughter, so that she can live calmly and serenely in society.”

Abela said that the weekend’s incident had made him think twice about letting his own 10-year-old daughter walk through Valletta. He ended by urging the courts to give appropriate sentences in criminal cases that reflect what society desires “to send a message of law and order”.

Police are still investigating the attack, with officers saying they cannot divulge any information on ongoing investigations at this early stage.

But parents are not taking the attack sitting down, urging authorities to step in and ensure that the next attack doesn’t result in a more serious – if not fatal – injury.
