A parliamentary motion has been filed by the Nationalist Party to revoke a recent legal notice that extended music playing hours in Valletta.

The motion was filed by Darren Carrabott, Mario de Marco and Paula Mifsud Bonnici, who were all elected in the area. They argued that rather than improve on its unique characteristics, the legal notice will turn the Capital City into Paceville.

A vote will be held on Wednesday.

Valletta has transformed into a popular nightlife hub in recent years and its addition to the music exemption list, which also includes Paceville, Buġibba and Qawra, appears to be an acknowledgement by the authorities of its newfound status.

However, it has proven to be controversial among Valletta residents, with a 59-year-old woman telling Lovin Malta that she has grown to dislike jazz due to the regular live street music that plays as she is trying to sleep. PN MP Darren Carabott has also filed a parliamentary motion calling for the revocation of the legal notice.

Prime Minister Robert Abela has said he has no intention of revoking the legal notice as he believes “a balance has already been struck”.

Should the legal notice be revoked?
