‘Particular Smell’ Led Customs Officers To Sniff Out Illegal Substances In Luqa’s Parcel Depot

A strange smell at Luqa’s parcel depot led customs officers to ‘sniff out’ a suspicious package, later revealed to carry illegal substances, a court was told.
Court proceedings kicked off on Tuesday against a 42-year-old Vietnamese woman by the name of Ann Pierre, who was detained following drug-related offences.
During the hearing, a customs officer described how he had received a parcel for control whilst working an overtime shift earlier in July. But something about the parcel was amiss.
A ‘particular smell’ emitted from the package piqued the curiosity of the customs officer and others in the area who were drawn to the scent.
The smell prompted officers to open the parcel – addressed to a certain ‘Linda Lee’ – to reveal various packets containing what seemed to be an illegal substance.
The find set off a chain of events that led straight to Linda Lee’s Mosta residence.
Lee opened her front door two find ‘deliverymen’ standing before her with her package. However, little did she know that said deliverymen were actually police officers.
Police searched the apartment and came across a pair of blue trousers with two bags stuffed with an unidentified ‘green substance’ later identified as 3.4kg of cannabis.
As their search intensified, they also seized mobile phones, cash and a passport under the name ‘Ann Pierre’.
