WATCH: Parties Held Across Sliema Hours After Abela Declares Pandemic ‘Behind Us’
Hours after Prime Minister Robert Abela declared the COVID-19 pandemic “behind us”, spontaneous parties took place across nightlife hotspots in Malta yesterday night.
Speaking on the Labour Party’s TV station yesterday morning, Abela also controversially pledged to refund those who were fined for breaking laws related to fighting the pandemic in recent weeks.
By the evening, photos and videos began circulating online of people completely ignoring social distancing rules at venues hosting large parties.
Meanwhile, Floriana supporters who recently broke social distancing rules to celebrate the fact that they were crowned champions of a football league that was cancelled early, began sharing the photos and videos of Sliema’s parties both privately and publicly, declaring the media “assholes” for having reported their own misgivings.
It emerged yesterday that four people would be charged and 43 would be fined over the mass celebrations in Floriana.
Today, the Prime Minister is expected to announce the further relaxation of pandemic measures for Malta to be able to assume “full normality”.
