Partit Demokratiku Leader Wants To Speed Up Unwanted Pregnancies And Give State Control Of Babies

Partit Demokratiku leader Godfrey Farrugia has proposed the “medical acceleration” of unwanted pregnancies, with the state taking control of the babies and putting them up for adoption as an alternative to abortion.

“Our position as a party is to support a broad interpretation to the right to life while recognizing that there are rare situations that need to be addressed with respect and humanity,” Farrugia said. “I am referring to medical emergencies where life of mother or the unborn may be at stake. There are also situations of unwanted pregnancy. We deal with these situations by offering an alternative where delivery is medically accelerated to limit the negative psychological impact on the mother. This is our current proposal.”

Clarifying his position, Farrugia noted that there are already a number of medical indications upon which medical staff undergo a pre-term delivery, a reference to life-threatening situations where a pre-term delivery is the only option.

He said that a legal provision should be introduced whereby the mother not wanting the baby would be listed as one of these medical indications.

“If on the basis of such a medical decision, patients who wish to abort because they do not want to remain pregnant, are also listed as one of these medical indications by a legal provision, than we will be offering a tangible medical solution,” the PD leader said. “This means that at a viable gestational age, delivery is induced, thus giving a chance to a pre-term baby through state adoption and the mother to live her life. It is a measure that protects the dignity and life of everyone, and is intended to decrease the number of Maltese women who seek abortions abroad. This calls for legislation.”

The PD, along with the PN and the Moviment Patrijotti Maltin, recently signed a pledge by Alleanza Bidla in favour of entrenching Malta’s abortion ban into the Constitution

When signing the declaration, Godfrey Farrugia added a proviso in reference to his call for the acceleration of unwanted pregnancies.

“The PD is in favour of life from conception till death. We are against the killing of unborn babies and of people in all stages of life. The PD is against abortion and against the subordination of women.”

“The PD has proposed a pro-life solution for pregnant women who don’t want to proceed with their pregnancies.”

Marlene Farrugia had criticised the pro-life pledge her partner signed as ‘senseless’

However, the PD’s decision to sign the pledge was criticised by its MP and former leader Marlene Farrugia, who is also Godfrey Farrugia’s partner, and MEP candidate Camilla Appelgren

Appelgren said she is in favour of the legalisation of abortion under certain circumstances, arguing that an outright ban won’t prevent pregnant women from traveling overseas to access an abortion. Meanwhile, Marlene Farrugia blasted Alleanza Bidla as “extremists and fundamentalists” who want to subordinate women and proposed a legal framework to speed up the delivery of unwanted pregnancies, with the state shouldering the cost.

Farrugia has since deleted her Facebook post while Appelgren has deleted her entire account.
