More information about the fourth person confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus in Malta has been released by Maltese health authorities today.

The partner and teenaged child of the 49-year-old man of foreign nationality confirmed with the coronavirus have been kept in Mater Dei and are being monitored.

The partner and child do not currently have any symptoms and have been swabbed to confirm whether they have the coronavirus.

Their results are expected later today.

It is also believed that the man, who lives in Malta, had travelled through Treviso before coming to the island. He is believed to have begun exhibiting symptoms such as fever on the 5th of March.

The man contacted the health authorities himself yesterday, whereupon a swab test was administered to him. When it was confirmed that he was infected with the coronavirus, arrangements were made to pick up this man from his home whereupon he was taken to Mater Dei.

He is in good health and has no symptoms, Superintendent of Public Health Charmaine Gauci said today.

She went on to say that while the man did self-quarantine eventually, he hadn’t from the beginning, though he didn’t go to work. When he did self-quarantine due to his symptoms, his partner and child also avoided going to work and school.

Gauci said she was happy that authorities had found these cases because now they could treat and contain them.

“We are expecting to find more cases in Malta,” Gauci said today, noting that as soon as more cases are found the people can be isolated and their close contacts followed up as well.

“This is active case finding, so we can take a public health protection precautions,” she said.

In total, 369 swab tests have been undertaken.

Aside from national precautions, Maltese health authorities said they were doing a continuous evaluation of possible new high-risk regions abroad. Some new areas, such as Tuscany, have been added to the high-risk areas to be avoided.
