Patients are having to wait as long as 14 hours at Mater Dei’s emergency department before receiving treatment.

On Thursday, nurses and doctors requested help from other departments due to the influx of patients at the emergency department, Times of Malta reported

Following the effects of heatwave Cerberus and the excessive power cuts which followed, Mater Dei is currently experiencing a much higher number of admissions, mainly due to heat-related issues, than usual.

At least 11 people reportedly died due to heat-related issues in just four days.

The most badly affected were people over 50, with the majority of people being admitted over the last days being weak elderly people.

Most cases are suffering with heat strokes, dehydration, breathing complications, and extreme exhaustion.

Although the heatwave has finally ended, with the islands being hit with Northern West winds as of late, the effects are still being felt among citizens, as some towns are still experiencing power cuts.
