Pembroke’s Mayor Went Round Giving Gifts To Children With Father Christmas Last Night
As part of an adorable annual tradition, Pembroke mayor Dean Hili and vice-mayor Raymond Lanzon took to the streets to deliver gifts to children. And they had a special guest with them; Santa Claus himself!
“Every year, we encourage parents to bring in gifts,” Hili told Lovin Malta. “They pay a nominal fee, which is basically a €2 donation. Then, we go round to the individual houses with Father Christmas, handing out presents, door by door.”
All the proceeds of the night go to l-Istrina, but this isn’t the only incentive Hili and his team have got up their sleeves. “The sum from yesterday wasn’t astronomical, but we do a lot more activities throughout the year to increase the total amount of money raised,” he told Lovin Malta.
“Yesterday’s weather was a bit of a challenge,” Hili told Lovin Malta. “But it just made the surprise even bigger for most of them, because they weren’t expecting us to still do it!”
And it sure looks like it was worth it, because what they got in return was dozens of happy faces as children were surprised with Christmas gifts by Santa himself on Thursday evening.
After all that time in the blistering cold and strong winds last night, the Pembroke mayor and vice-mayor woke up a little sick this morning. “I’m sneezing a bit, but I’ll be OK,” Hili told Lovin Malta. “After all, it was definitely worth seeing all the children’s happy faces!”
Pembroke is known for its strong sense of community. This Halloween saw the town go an extra mile with its street decorations, with mayor Dean Hili promising that “next year will be bigger and better.”
