‘People Had To Jump Over’: Trenches Left Exposed In Busy Msida Road

Roadworks on Triq il-Wied, Msida have been left completely exposed to vehicles and bystanders passing through the busy area.

Images sent to Lovin Malta show trenches with orange barriers on only one side of the works on the busy road connecting Msida to Birkirkara.

“Busses and cars were driving centimetres away from the trenches while people were squeezed in between,” a concerned commuter told Lovin Malta.

“There’s also a bus stop on the other side, people had to jump over the trench to get to it.”

The works are said to have been organised by Enemalta and Lovin Malta has reached out for a comment.

Msida Mayor Charles Selvaggi expressed concern at the works, saying; “It would seem that some contractors, but not all, do not understand the importance of safety.”

He explained that the Local Council gets a lot of complaints for the way some contractors work, as well as the state they leave the roads in after.

Responding to whether the Local Council has received complaints on this particular project, Selvaggi said no but he has received on others.

“For example at the moment there is a whole area near the Junior College which has been dug up and is being dug up a second time and which is causing a lot of inconvenience to the residents.”

“There should be an authority who should monitor this and not wait for people to complain. Safety should always be first for the workmen but also for whoever is passing in the area. Consideration should also be given to the inconvenience caused to residents in the area,” Selvaggi continued.
