‘People Have Had Enough Of An Intrusive Europe’ – Peter Agius Signs Chat Control Petition
PN MEP Peter Agius has signed a parliamentary petition by a group of Maltese students against the EU’s proposed ‘Chat Control’ bill.
Agius becomes the first MEP to publicly support the petition that was launched by Students for Liberty.
Two of their activists – David Briguglio Brown and Nathan Aquilina – recently spoke to Lovin Malta about why this bill is so concerning.

Agius has now thrown his weight behind their petition, which calls on the Maltese Parliament and government to express its opposition to this proposal.
“People have had enough of an intrusive Europe which seems to want to regulate every aspect of their lives without sufficient concern to our liberties,” Agius said.
“Europe was founded on a strong desire for liberty and peace. I will make sure to reflect that in representing you as MEP for Malta and Gozo.”
“I will also be active in the negotiations on this proposed legislation in the European Parliament to safeguard our liberties in private communications and the digital world.”
He encouraged others to sign the petition too.
The proposal will allow the scanning of all private digital communications, including encrypted ones, as a means of preventing and combating child sexual abuse.
However, critics warn that the proposal goes against the fundamental EU right to privacy and that technology hasn’t advanced to a stage where the detection of false positives can be prevented.
