People in Malta should continue following basic COVID-19 mitigation measures like social distancing or wearing masks even if restrictions have now been lifted, the Superintendence for Public Health has said.

In a statement, the SPH insisted that while the situation in Malta now seems to be under control, with several days of low or zero reported cases, it was important to follow the public health principles of social distancing, hygiene and the wearing of face masks/visors. The chances of person-to-person transmission from exposure is cumulative, the SPH said, the longer and the closer the exposure, the higher the chance of getting infected.

“It is important to keep in mind that the pandemic is not over and will not be so until a vaccine is available; COVID-19 is still circulating in the community, both locally and abroad. The chances of person-to-person transmission from exposure is cumulative, the longer and the closer the exposure, the higher the chance of getting infected,” the SPH said.

Malta’s public health emergency was lifted yesterday putting away with the last remaining restrictions. The nation’s ports were also opened to commercial travel, which came as a sign of relief for the struggling tourism industry and ass a cause for concern of people still fearful of a second wave.
