People On Comprehensive Insurance Plans Will Most Likely Be Covered For Damage After This Weekend’s Storm In Malta

People covered by fully-comprehensive insurance plans will most likely have their claims met by companies over the extensive damage caused by this weekend’s storm.

Vehicles, properties and boats were victims of the 53-knot strong winds, with the significant damages caused by falling debris meaning that insurers would be gearing up for a busy couple of weeks.

Speaking to Lovin Malta, Director General of the Malta Insurer’s Association Adrian Galea, explained that ‘An Act-of-God’ would not be factored into insurers decisions over claims, saying that “you’re either insured, or you aren’t”.

“If you are properly insured, you will be covered, what we advise is for people to approach their insurance companies and discuss whatever happened,” a spokesperson said.

“If your cover is not adequate, you cannot expect to be covered”

With regards to motor vehicles specifically, Galea said it was highly unlikely that those on third-party plans will be covered for any damage.

It is still too early to assess the extent of the damage caused by the storm, however, Galea revealed that the association had already begun to approach its members to collect some data, with reliable statistics expected to be completed within a month.

“Every claim submitted will be listened to by insurers and settlements are expected to be made over a number of weeks,” Galea said.
