People Protest Against Israel In Valletta Ahead Of 7th October Anniversary
A day before the anniversary of the 7th October attacks, people took to the streets of Valletta to pressure Malta into taking a much stronger position against Israel.
Organised by the Palestinian embassy to Malta and a number of NGOs and groups, including Moviment Graffitti, had the following requests for the Maltese government.
1. Take a clearer and more decisive stance against the war in the Middle East and officially denounce Israel for committing “genocide”.
2. Press for sanctions against Israel
3. Ban ships and airplanes delivering military supplies to Israel from Maltese airspace and waters
4. Formally recognise Palestine as a state
Graffitti activist Andre Callus said organisers have no intention of appealing to Israel because you “cannot reason with colonials and terrorists”.
“We were calling out the genocide a year ago, and since then over 42,000 Palestinians and 2,000 Lebanese have been massacred in front of our eyes,” he said.
“It is clear that Israel is nothing more than a terrorist state whose only goal is to seize the land of Palestinians, Lebanese, Syrians and more. Zionism is a racist, colonialist and murderous ideology that must be strongly opposed.”
Callus questioned why Malta has not yet recognised Palestine as a state, despite repeated declarations by the authorities that it will do so when the “time is right”.
“It’s a symbolic step but such an obvious one, so why won’t the government even do this small thing?” he questions. “Are other countries controlling Malta and pulling its strings?”
