People Will Be Compensated For Power Cut And Food Waste, Robert Abela Promises

A “compensation system” for those affected by lengthy power cuts is being set up, Prime Minister Robert Abela said in a new interview with ONE News today.
Saying “immediate” compensation must be given to those who “lost perishables in their fridges and freezers, or passed through other inconveniences,” Abela noted that this system would go beyond appliance damage.
“Enemalta and government must answer for this inconvenience. We are drafting a compensation system that will target this episode, beyond the traditional system of Enemalta making good for damage to appliances,” Abela said.
This comes after a number of Labour members – including Jason Micallef and MEP Alex Agius Saliba – called for some form of financial support to the families and shop owners facing regular, lengthy power cuts all week.
Earlier this week, some stores even began selling food at cheap prices to try to get rid of the items before they spoil.
Abela hit out at criticism coming from sections of the public as well as the PN that the reason behind the power cuts wasn’t due to the intense heat on the cables, but due to the over-demand being placed on the network due to the sheer amount of people on the island.
He said that an unprecedented upgrade of Malta’s electrical distribution network was now needed beyond the word already put into the network recently.
