Peppi Azzopardi For President? Franco Debono Calls For Malta’s Next Head Of State To Be Outside Politics

Lawyer Franco Debono has called for Malta’s next president to be coming from outside politics, rather than having someone who was previously involved in partisan politics.
Debono first made this suggestion a few months ago, where he later added that it would serve the country well if Malta’s head of state would be someone coming from the journalistic sector.
Now, he’s gone a step further, suggesting Peppi Azzopardi as someone who could be the perfect candidate to take on the role of Malta’s next president.
“A while ago, I had suggested that the Republic’s president shouldn’t come from a political background, but rather a journalistic background,” Debono wrote on social media.
Asked who would come to mind from the journalistic sector during a discussion with a local politician, Debono thought of Azzopardi.
“You wouldn’t guess who came to mind and who I ended up suggesting to him – Peppi Azzopardi. He loves the country, and the contribution he has given in terms of journalism and creativity is immeasurable.”
He went on to list a number of good qualities that Azzopardi has, such as his commitment to current affairs, his knowledge of Malta’s history and politics, and the fact that he’s a man with a good heart.
“A man that knows how to bring people together around the same table even when they have differing opinions. A man with values, who is always careful on how to say something to not hurt anyone.”
Debono stressed that even though Malta’s last presidents were all good, with some being better than others, Malta needs to turn over a new leaf.
“I’ve named Peppi as an example – my point is that we should try to find a president from outside politics, so this nation can mature and move forward,” he concluded.
What do you make of Debono’s suggestion?
