Permit For Massive Mdina Bastions Hotel Revoked By Planning Authority

The Planning Authority has just revoked the permit for a massive hotel on the Saqajja hill, under the Mdina bastions.
In 2021, the PA approved plans for a sizeable hotel right next to the Mdina bastions, set to replace the old Tattingers Club.
If constructed, the development would have greatly impinged on the historical views of Mdina, as well as taking up public land.
“Together with Din l-Art Helwa and the Archaeological Society Malta, we appealed this decision. The Planning Tribunal (EPRT) has just ruled in our favour and revoked the permit since the necessary geological studies had not been carried out before the project’s approval and because of the proposal’s inadequate design,” Moviment Graffitti stated following the revocation.
The plans for the 81-room hotel were also partly laid Outside of the Development Zone and were posing a threat to the foundations of the Mdina fortification.
Lawyer Claire Bonello and perit Tara Cassar represented the organisations in this appeal, which proved to be successful.
Despite a number of objections, the PA’s case officer had recommended the application for approval during the screening process.
The Rabat and Mdina local councils had also been against the development, also stressing that a thorough geological survey was required.
