Despite the promise of “new water”, the highly polished reclaimed water, which can be used for agriculture, industry, landscaping and other applications, as pledged to farmers, there is something missing in the dispensers: water.

PN MEP candidate Peter Agius, expressed his concern about the water situation in Malta in a Facebook post earlier today.

“‘New water’ or ‘No water’? Today, I received a distressing photo of a dispenser labeled ‘new water’, which was completely empty. There was no water available.”

“We have spent €60 million from European funds facilities to recycle water for farmers, but unfortunately, many of these facilities are not working, and farmers cannot access water.”

“From Ħaż-Żabbar to Mellieħa and even in Gozo, the same story repeats. During these scorching days, numerous farmers are struggling to water their crops and livestock.”

“Another consequence of this crisis is the skyrocketing food prices, as many farmers are forced to buy water from bowser trucks, which adds to their expenses.”

“We cannot continue like this. The European funds are meant to be utilised for projects that bring tangible benefits to the Maltese consumers!”

Agius highlights the alarming issue of water scarcity in Malta and emphasises that despite significant investments in water recycling facilities, they are not producing sufficient supply.

As a result, farmers are facing difficulties in accessing water to irrigate their crops and support their livestock, leading to potential losses and an increase in food prices.

He calls for better management of European funds, ensuring that they are channelled towards projects that effectively address the water crisis and benefit the Maltese population.

It is evident that the situation requires urgent attention and a well-thought-out plan to ensure a sustainable and reliable water supply for all.
