Peter Caruana Galizia Backs Lead Inspector’s Role In Murder Investigation: ‘I Have Nothing Bad To Say Against Keith Arnaud’
Peter Caruana Galizia, the husband of the assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, has reiterated his and his family’s faith in Chief Homicide Inspector Keith Arnaud’s place in the investigation.
Speaking during a brief sitting in murder suspect Yorgen Fenech’s constitutional case to get Arnaud removed from the investigation, Caruana Galizia said:
“We always had a good relationship; whenever we asked for a meeting they accepted it, I have nothing bad to say against Arnaud.”
Fenech claims that he was fed information on the investigation from the former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s chief of staff Keith Schembri. The information, Fenech claims, was coming straight from Arnaud.
This included crucial details like the imminent arrests of the three men charged with carrying out the assassination, a potential pardon for Vince Muscat, and their phones being tapped.
Investigations into the leaks are currently underway,
There have been questions surrounding Arnaud and police’s role in the investigation ever since, particular with regards to Schembri, with the Inspector admitting that he regularly updated Muscat and Schembri during official but unprecedented meetings on the case.
Middleman Melvin Theuma’s secret recordings have also revealed that Arnaud’s predecessor, Silvio Valletta, leaked information on the case. Valletta was the one who started the highly irregular meetings with Schembri and Muscat.
Arnaud has revealed that the police are yet to locate Keith Schembri’s ‘lost phone’ and that he had no idea about Schembri and Fenech’s close relationship when sharing crucial information about the case.
Investigators have also confirmed that they left his Castille office unguarded for close to two days after Schembri’s arrest, only to search it ten days later. Schembri’s office at the Labour Party Headquarters is yet to be examined.
Arnaud confirmed during the constitutional case that Schembri while officially not under arrest is still under investigation for his potential involvement in the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, along with a litany of other offences which include:
Tampering with evidence, leaking extensive information about the investigation, obstructing justice, and acquiring a phantom job for middleman Melvin Theuma.
Schembri has testified in the constitutional case. Still, it proved to be evasive after he contradicted the version of events of three people – Yorgen Fenech himself, his doctor Adrian Vella, and Melvin Theuma.
