Petition Launched For Malta To Erect Public Monument In Honour Of Queen Elizabeth II
An online petition has been launched for Malta to erect a public monument in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.
“This woman gave so much to the world and I think it is our time to show respect and pay her back by honouring her in the form of a statue,” the petition launched by Jerome Farrugia reads.
Farrugia told Lovin Malta that he believes the monument should be sited at Pjazza San Ġorġ or the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
Asked to respond to people who may argue that Malta shouldn’t erect a statue in honour of a former coloniser, Farrugia noted that a statue to Queen Victoria already stands in the centre of Valletta.
“Why not have one of Queen Elizabeth, who has done so much for the world even this country?” he said. “We already have so many statues and monuments commemorating this and that. I’m sure that a statue of Queen Elizabeth would be appreciated, especially since this was her home as a princess.”
Queen Elizabeth was Malta’s head of state between 1954 and 1974, when the island became a republic and Sir Anthony Mamo became its first President.
Malta remains the only country besides the UK which the Queen called home and the late monarch had described her time here as one of the best moments of her life as it was the only time she could live normally.
The Queen’s last overseas visit was to Malta, for the 2015 Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting.
