Phew! Historic ‘Medicane’ Zorbas Will Just Miss Malta. Here’s This Weekend’s Weather For The Islands

Hours-long alerts, boat-crashing seas and portable-toilet-blowing winds became the order of the day this week as warnings of a ‘Medicane’ potentially hitting Malta made headlines yesterday. Now that the islands seem to have steered safe of what’s become the strongest Mediterranean cyclone ever recorded (hilariously named Zorbas), here’s what the weather in Malta is looking like for this weekend.

Over the last three days, the strong Northeast wind has been reaching Force 6 and 7, with gusts going all the way up to Force 8 at times. In fact, for the third consecutive day, the Gozo Channel ferry will be using Ċirkewwa’s south quay for the Maltese stop until further notice. However, as the highly reliable Gozo Weather Page reported this morning, the wind is expected to all but die down by this evening.

As it stands, the dark clouds currently covering many areas around the Maltese Islands are actually the edge of Medicane Zorbas. That’s why today’s weather forecast is showing possible showers over the islands, with cool highs of 24°C seeing the wind go down to about Force 2 and 3 by this evening.

By tomorrow, partly cloudy weather will be bringing highs of 27°C which feel like 29°C. By Sunday, the sun should be back in full force, with the highest temperatures feeling more like 30°C all over again.

Over the next three days, the lows should go down to 19°C, with the westerly and northerly winds hovering around Force 3. For now, however, it is important to remember that the Met Office has issued a Yellow Warning of strong North-Northwest winds which might still batter the Maltese Islands up to 4pm this afternoon.

Meanwhile, the historic and rare Medicane Zorbas has arrived in Greece earlier than expected, with torrential rain and gale force winds reaching southern Greece last night. While not technically of hurricane strength, Medicanes can reach a similar strength to a Category 1 hurricane.

In 2014, Medicane Qendresa had hit Malta with sustained winds of up to 70 miles per hour and gusts of up to 95mph. Just last year, a Halloween storm formation had also hit the islands and caused damage and chaos in areas like the Grand Harbour.

Many people have used Zorbas’ formation as further proof of climate change, considering it’s actually the third year in a row that such rare weather has occurred in the area around the Ionian sea.

Holidaymakers and locals in Greece and Turkey should be bearing the brunt of Medicane Zorbas this time round, with torrential rain and gale force winds already reaching some islands
