Philip Calleja, Priest Who Spent 70 Years Working To Help Refugees In Malta, Dies Aged 93

Mgr Philip Calleja has passed away at 93, Malta’s Curia announced this morning.

Calleja was known for his particular dedication in working with and supporting migrants and refugees who sought shelter in Malta.

He passed away at 3.45am this morning in Fleur-de-Lys. He was born 8th December, 1928, in Valletta.

For half a century, he was the director of the Migrants Commission that had been set up in 1950. It was set up in light of the large number of Maltese leaving the island at the time. 

He helped both those Maltese who were seeking a new life abroad, as well as foreigners hoping to find a new life on the island.
