Phoenicia Hotel Plans Should Be Investigated By Financial Crimes Police, Jason Azzopardi Says
Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi has urged the financial crimes police to investigate plans by the Malta Tourism Authority to spend public funds on rooms at the Phoenicia Hotel for some of its staff.
“To those of you who cannot keep up with the cost of living, know that people close to Castille were caught in the process of spending tens of thousands of euro of your tax money to have fun at a hotel,” Azzopardi said.
“They were caught and had to cancel their plans but a crime was still carried out. An attempt by a public officer to carry out a crime is a crime in and of itself. One would expect the FCID to proceed, right?
Times of Malta reported today that the MTA’s events team had planned to book rooms for two weeks at the five-star Phoenicia Hotel in Floriana so they could be as close as possible to the Fairyland Christmas village.
MTA’s head of events Lionel Gerada reportedly approved the plans.
However, the Tourism Ministry reportedly told the MTA to change its plans after it received questions from Times of Malta. As it stands, the MTA has one room booked at the Phoenicia Hotel to provide “logistical support” to Fairyland.
