PL Candidate Urges Malta To Lower Age Of Consent From 16 To 14
Labour MEP candidate Claudette Abela Baldacchino has come out in favour of Malta lowering the age of sexual consent from 16 to 14.
“Education is key but we will never manage to put a hold on this one,” Abela Baldacchino said. “We are all human beings, so are youth.”
Malta only lowered the age of consent from 18 to 16 six years ago but some serious legal question marks remain.
In a recent case reported on by Times of Malta, an ex-couple was charged with having underage sex with each other when they were 15 and 14 years old.
Although they were cleared after refusing to testify against each other, magistrate Abigail Critien urged the government to change the law.
She recommended lowering the age of consent from 16 to 14 or decriminalising sex if both are underage minors of a similar age and engage in consensual sex.
