Two Labour MEP candidates have filed a judicial protest demanding the Electoral Commission fine the Nationalist Party for failing to publish its accounts and donations for the past two years.

Daniel Attard and Marija Sara Vella Gafà noted that the party financing law stipulates that a political party which fails to submit their accounts is liable to a maximum €10,000 administrative fine for each violation.

A party treasurer who fails to submit a donation report is personally liable to a maximum €20,000 administrative fine for each violation.

Since the PN failed to publish their accounts and donation reports for the past two years, Attard and Vella Gafà argued that the party is therefore liable to a maximum €20,000 fine while its treasurer Mario Ellul is liable to a maximum €40,000 fine.

“The PN’s hypocrisy when it comes to the rule of law has no limits,”  Vella Gafà said. “The time has come for the Electoral Commission to take the required legal action, including by imposing fines and sanctions. They scream about the rule of law but believe that only they have a right to rule.”

Attard added that “no one is above the law, not even the PN”.

In 2022, an election year, the PL declared a total income of €2.46 million, including €1.93 in donations, an expenditure of €4.58 million, and €38.7 million in equity and liabilities.

Its donation report shows it declared €55,766 in donations under €50, €502,531 in donations between €51 and €500, €1,359,774 in donations between €501 and €7,000, and one €10,000 donation by PAVI Supermarkets, who said they gave the same amount to PN.

However, its media house ONE hasn’t published its accounts since 2010, while the PN’s media house Media.Link hasn’t published theirs since 2005.

Do you think the Electoral Commission should take action?
