PL MEP Alex Agius Saliba Signs Petition Against Plan To Relocate Gżira Petrol Station To Public Garden
Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba has announced he has signed a petition by the Gżira local council against the relocation of a petrol station within or adjacent to a public garden.
“I signed the petition. As I have said publicly on several occasions, the Gżira Garden should continue to be enjoyed by the people of Gżira and not become a petrol station,” Agius Saliba said underneath a post by mayor Conrad Borg Manché, who is promoting the petition.
The mayor thanked Agius Saliba for his support.
The Planning Authority has approved the relocation of a petrol station which has stood outside Manoel Island since the 1960s to the adjacent Ġnien Il-Kunsill Tal-Ewropa, taking up almost 1,000 square meters of this sorely needed green lung in the highly urbanised environment.
Borg Manché has strongly resisted these plans, initiating five lawsuits on behalf of the Gżira Local Council and calling out PL President Ramona Attard for her role as lawyer for the Lands Authority fighting in favour of the petrol station’s relocation.
This isn’t the first time Agius Saliba has publicly come out against development plans in recent months. In January, he urged the Planning Authority to reject plans by a private developer to build a luxury retreat centre on Comino, describing the plan as “stupid and insensitive”.
Do you agree with the relocation of the petrol station?
