PL MP Edward Zammit Lewis: ‘Malta Should Immediately Recognise Palestine As A State’

PL MP Edward Zammit Lewis has urged the Maltese government to immediately recognise Palestine as a state.
Zammit Lewis spoke out after France announced that it will officially recognise Palestine as a state during the next UN General Assembly in September.
Other European countries – including Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, and Norway – have already recognised the statehood of Palestine.
While Prime Minister Robert Abela had said that Malta would recognise Palestine as a state following a UN conference on 20th June, this move was delayed after the conference got postponed.
Zammit Lewis said that France’s decision is significant as it will become the first G7 nation to recognise Palestine as a state.
“I have always said that Malta should take this step too but choose the moment cautiously,” he said.
“I now say that Malta should take this step immediately. At the same time, it should participate in important alliance-building work on a European and global level in favour of Palestine and against the unacceptable atrocities that are taking place in Gaza, which we cannot keep on ignoring.”
“I therefore urge my friends Robert Abela and Ian Borg to immediately take this step in our country’s name.”
