The aircraft carrying the Malta national football team to the Faroe Islands was forced to return to the island after encountering “technical problems”.

TVM Sport reported that there were around 70 people on board the chartered aircraft, including the Malta team’s players, coaches and staff, guests of the Malta Football Association and a few supporters.

The flight was originally supposed to leave Malta at 10am but was delayed to noon. However, a few minutes after take-off, passengers were informed that the plane had to return to the Malta International Airport as a precaution after encountering technical problems.

Malta is scheduled to play the Faroe Islands on Friday in the first ever round of the newly-formed UEFA Nations League.
