Plans For Large ODZ Development Next To Għajnsielem Neolithic Huts Resubmitted For Approval

A planning application for the construction of a supermarket, shop, three-level underground parking and 18 residential units on mostly ODZ land in Gozo has been resubmitted.
A previous application had drawn reservations from both the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage (SCH) and the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) who had initially objected to this development citing archaeological sensitivity and uptake of rural land.
SCH said that the proposed extensive excavation would “inevitably destroy surviving features on site.”
Planning application PA/4619/23 lies 38 metres from the remains of two Neolithic huts discovered in 1987 during the construction of a house. The area was intended to be left as an archaeological buffer zone.
The developer proposing this project is Gozitan developer Francesco Grima while the architect is Alex Bigeni.
Objection period is open until 18/09/2023 from [email protected]
