Information indicates that there are plans for the Gozo Channel to be privatised, according to a conference held by two Nationalist MPs.

The Spokesman of the PN for Gozo, Alex Borg, and fellow Nationalist MP Ivan Castillo, said that the party has information in hand that indicates the privatisation of the channel and affects all of those who use the service.

During the conference, the speakers of the opposition party asked a series of questions.

Among them, they asked if plans have been drawn up to change the current business model, and whether any studies and consultations have been done.

“The Gozo Channel is the life link between Malta and Gozo, residents of the sister island, as well as those who visit and do business there, completely rely on this essential service,” PN explained.

“We understand the importance of the Gozo Channel, not only as a business but as an essential service that provides for the livelihood of Gozitan families. This is why the people deserve to know the immediate and long term plans for the island’s channel.”

They further asked whether it is true that plans have been drafted for the government to privatise the Gozo Channel and whether they can verify that plans have been drawn up to change the ports of Ċirkewwa and Mġarr in Gozo.

“What will be done of the workers who are employed both directly and indirectly with the Gozo Channel? Will the Gozo Channel be part of the reduction in the budget that was promised by the Government? If so, what are the repercussions of this reduction?” they continued.

The speakers finally urged that the government must give clear answers to quell the uncertainty about the connectivity between the islands.

The Nationalist Party has not disclosed what information they have that indicates the privatisation of the channel and they are currently awaiting the government’s response.
