PN And Independent Team Up To Exclude PL From Floriana Mayorship
The Nationalist Party and independent councillor Nigel Holland have joined forces to exclude the Labour Party from the mayorship of Floriana, despite the PL having won a relative majority of votes.
The deal will see independent councillor Nigel Holland return to his previous role as Floriana mayor, with PN’s James Aaron Ellul as vice mayor.
Although the PL won 43.64% of the Floriana vote compared to the PN’s 31.01%, both parties elected two councillors each. Nigel Holland, who contested under the Floriana L-Ewwel banner, won 16.67% of the vote.
Last week, the PL proposed their most popular councillor, Sandra Sammut Hili, as mayor, but PN councillors James Aaron Ellul and Justine Palmer voted against the nomination.
The PL attempted a similar strategy at the Birkirkara local council, where the PN won a relative majority of votes but independent Kaylocke Buhagiar’s election meant neither party enjoyed a majority of seats.
PL nominated Buhagiar as Birkirkara mayor, but its attempts to keep PN out of the council were thwarted by PL councillor Yana Borg Debono Grech, the PL’s most popular Birkirkara councillor.
PN’s Desirei Grech was therefore automatically appointed mayor for the next three months, when another vote will be taken.
