PN Announces First Public Activity Of 2023 – A Discussion Against Abortion At A Floriana Hotel
The Nationalist Party’s first public activity of 2023 will be a meeting this weekend to criticise the abortion bill proposed by the government.
“During the meeting, which will be themed ‘Yes, in favour of life’, the importance of protecting life from conception till its natural death will be discussed,” a PN statement read.
“The PN invites the people of Malta to unite with it in this initiative to stop Robert Abela and his government from acting hardheaded in their attempt to legalise abortion against the will of the people.”
The meeting will start on Sunday at 10am at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Floriana.
Former PN MP Edwin Vassallo has been carrying out a similar initiative over the past year, touring the nation to discuss the risks to Malta’s abortion laws.
A protest in Valletta last December against the abortion bill, which will allow doctors to terminate pregnancies when the mother’s life or health is in danger, attracted an estimated 20,000 people, making it one of the best-attended protests in recent Maltese history.
The meeting is expected to discuss the latest developments in the constitutional court case opened by US tourist Andrea Prudente, who is arguing that Mater Dei’s refusal to grant her an abortion when she suffered pregnancy complications while on holiday in Malta breached her human rights.
Gynaecologist Alberto Vella, who took care of Prudente during her time at Mater Dei, and Yves Muscat Baron, who heads Mater Dei’s Maternity and Gynaecology Department, testified that Prudente’s life was never at risk and that the baby had a chance of survival.
