PN Calls Decision To Drop Maltese Requirement For KM Malta Cabin Crew A ‘Disgrace’

The Nationalist Party has come out strongly against the new national airline’s decision to drop Maltese as a requirement for cabin crew staff.

“For the first time in 50 years, cabin crew of a Maltese national airline won’t need to know how to speak in Maltese,” Shadow Tourism Minister Mario De Marco said, after KM Malta Airlines’ decision was reported by Illum.

“This is a disgrace to our country because the national airline doesn’t only serve the needs of the tourism industry but of Maltese people who travel to go on holiday, work, and receive medical treatment.”

“The use of the Maltese language as a main language on the plane is also part of the authentic experience that tourists seek out. Obviously, other languages can and should be used alongside Maltese, but Maltese shouldn’t be excluded.”

The PN urged the government to immediately revoke its decision.

KM Malta Airlines said its decision was taken in light of estimates that over 80% of its passengers will be foreign nationals.

Flight announcements will continue to be made in both Maltese and English, and the airline has pledged that some cabin crew members who know how to speak in Maltese will be present on every flight.
