The Nationalist Party will force Labour MPs to take a stand on JeanPaul Sofia’s mother’s request for a public inquiry into his death at a Kordin construction site.

PN Bernard Grech announced that the Opposition will file a parliamentary motion, requesting a public inquiry to establish who was responsible for the 20-year-old’s death last December.

“[Prime Minister] Robert Abela keeps refusing to order a public inquiry into JeanPaul Sofia’s tragic death and is ignoring his mother’s appeal,” Grech said.

“It is our duty to ensure that justice is done and that the full truth comes out. Society needs to send a clear signal that it cannot allow such serious and tragic incidents to take place without a response.”

The PN’s motion comes after Sofia’s mother Isabelle Bonnici issued an impassioned plea for a public inquiry.

“I want to know exactly what happened and whose hands have been stained with my son’s blood. Only through a public inquiry can the shortcomings in the sector come out in the open and recommendations be issued, which would perhaps lead to proper reform,” Bonnici said

Meanwhile, PN MP Jerome Caruana Cilia – who was the first MP to call for a public inquiry – published a video from outside the Kordin site that collapsed on 3rd December, tragically claiming Sofia’s life.

“My conscience doesn’t allow me to remain silent, which is why I spoke out in Parliament in the name of Isabelle, her relatives and the nation in favour of a public inquiry.”

Abela has so far resisted calls from his family to open a public inquiry, warning it could clash with ongoing police investigations.

Should a public inquiry be held into Sofia’s death?
