PN Government Blocked Attempt To Rename Street After Child School Ground Victim, PL Candidate Warns
Labour MEP candidate Daniel Attard has accused a former PN administration of blocking attempts to rename a street in Santa Venera after a child who died in a tragic accident at a government school.
Attard said he decided to speak out after speaking to the father of Adrian Borg, who died in a freak accident in 2003 after a goalpost toppled on his head during a PE lesson at a state school.
A board of inquiry found that the incident could have been avoided but couldn’t identify anyone who was directly responsible.
Attard attempted to contrast the PN government’s response to this case with the current PL government’s response to the death of Jean Paul Sofia.
“Not only was there no public inquiry and no one shouldered political responsibility, but the government silenced the victims’ parents and asked them to signed an agreement not to speak publicly about the case,” Attard said.
“Worse, the government directly intervened to stop a street from being named after Adrian Borg, to make sure the case is buried for good.”
“One shortcoming doesn’t justify another and, as I have stressed, no one triumphs from the loss of life. However, there is a big difference between those who view victims as political instruments and those who are ready to listen, learn lessons, and above all, take action.”
He questioned whether the likes of David Agius, Mario De Marco and Carm Mifsud Bonnici, who were all PN MPs back in 2003, will shoulder political responsibility.
“Beyond all partisan arguments, this is an issue of credibility,” he insisted.
Do you think a street should be renamed after Adrian Borg?
