Opposition leader Adrian Delia has called for an independent inquiry into revelations that the Planning Authority had flown in one of its board members on a private jet to vote in favour of the db Group’s high-rise project in Pembroke.

In comments to Lovin Malta, Delia said several questions need to be answered about the incident.

“Is this the first time the Planning Authority has flown in one of its board members on a private jet?” he asked. “If so, when, and if not, why now?”

“Did [Jacqueline Gili] know in advance of this board meeting and did she obtain permission before travelling? If she had permission, then what changed the Planning Authority’s mind? If she didn’t have permission, then was she forced to come back or did she decide to come back out of her own free will? If she was forced to come back, then who forced her? If it was her decision, then why did the taxpayer pay for her flight?”

“Since there so many questions, I think an independent inquiry should definitely be held to establish the facts.”

Newsbook revealed yesterday that Jacqueline Gili, who was appointed to the board by the Finance Ministry, was flown in from a family holiday in Sicily by private jet to attend the meeting at an estimated cost of €15,000 to the taxpayer.

Gili remained silent throughout the meeting and eventually voted along with nine other members in favour of the project, outvoting the four critics.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said he disagrees with the Planning Authority’s line of action and that the PA hadn’t informed the government beforehand. Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg, who is politically responsible for the PA, said that he has requested details about the incident from the PA and that the government will act once it has these details in hand.
