PN MP Alex Borg Praises Ian Borg For OSCE Chair Appointment
Nationalist MP Alex Borg put political rivalries aside to praise Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg appointment as chairperson of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the world’s largest intergovernmental security organisation.
“Although we espouse different political ideologies, I believe that the appointment of Minister Ian Borg as chairperson of the OSCE for 2024 is a major honour for Malta,” Alex Borg wrote.
“Best of luck, colleague.”
The OSCE is a vital organisation on the global front, with its 57 countries focusing on crucial issues like arms control, promotion of human rights, freedom of the press, and fair elections.
This is the first time that Malta will take on its annually rotating chairmanship since it was set up in 1991.
Malta’s nomination came after Russia blocked NATO member Estonia from taking on the role, with a Maltese chairmanship viewed as acceptable to all sides.
Ian Borg said he was honoured to become the first Maltese Foreign Affairs Minister to be appointed OSCE chairperson.
“This is another vote of trust in Malta’s foreign politics in these challenging times for the international community,” he said.
