PN MP Alex Borg Urges More Resources For Immigration Police To Ensure Lawbreakers Are Deported

Nationalist MP Alex Borg has said the immigration police should be better resourced to allow them to carry out more inspections on foreign nationals and deport those found to be breaking the law.

Interviewed on F Living recently, Borg said that while many foreign nationals “leave a positive impact on the economy”, the time has come for “certain legal amendments and changes in the way enforcement is carried out, particularly with regards to people on working visas”.

“Immigration officers and inspectors should visit villages and take action against foreigners who are causing trouble in society, endangering the lives of Maltese citizens and not allowing people to live decent lives,” he said.

“At the end of the day, this is our home and if we cannot live safely here then something must be done. It is the duty of politicians to address these problems and implement certain amendments.”

Asked by Lovin Malta what kind of amendments he is proposing, Borg said the police’s Immigration Department should be given more resources and manpower to carry out more inspections across Malta.

“They will be able to inspect all immigrants within Malta and Gozo, and if some of them are found to be in breach of any Maltese laws, they should be deported and refused protection in Malta,” he said.

“Those who are following Maltese law and respect our country should be given all the protection necessary to live a decent life in Malta.”

Borg referred to the recent case of a Libyan national who was charged with stealing cash, mobile phones, documents and other items from Ramla l-Ħamra and Marsalforn.

“He should be deported if this is possible after he serves his sentence,” Borg said.

Asked whether people found guilty of breaking the law should be deported before or after they’ve served their sentence in Malta, Borg said that “it depends on what sort of law is broken and the severity of the crime or contravention”.

When it was pointed out that courts already order deportations of foreign nationals as part of the sentence, Borg admitted it was the case but stressed on the need for the immigration police to be given more resources to allow them to “touch base on all crimes and contraventions being done by foreigners”.
