PN MP Janice Chetcuti Comes Out Strongly Against Proposed Bully Breed Dog Ban

Nationalist MP and Shadow Anima Rights Minister Janice Chetcuti has come out strongly against a proposal by a group of animal rights NGOs for Malta to ban the importation of bully breed dogs.
Chetcuti, who owns a bully breed dog herself, said that these dogs are “beautiful, loyal and intelligent” and warned that banning them would be akin to punishing them for the way some of their owners have abused them.
Instead, she said people ought abusing bully breed dogs and all kinds of dogs should be punished severely, while existing laws banning the cropping of ears and tails and making micro-chipping obligatory should be enforced, and new regulations on breeding should come into force.
“It is true that these aren’t the easiest dogs to re-home but it isn’t their fault,” she said.
“Banning their importation to Malta won’t help them but will simply make them more attractive for those heartless people who are causing them all of this excess suffering.”
Animal Welfare Commissioner Alison Bezzina has previously come out in favour of a ban on bully breeds because many of them are abandoned and that some sanctuaries don’t accept them because they are hard to re-home.
