PN MP Proves Malta Was Relying On Interconnector And Tanker Was Disconnected During Storm Power Cut

PN MP and energy spokesperson Mark Anthony Sammut has presented evidence proving that the LNG tanker was indeed disconnected at the time of last weekend’s power cuts and the interconnector was carrying all the load.

This comes after Energy Minister Miriam Dalli rebutted the claims made earlier by Sammut.

On Monday, the Minister outrightly said that the energy spokesperson’s statement was a lie, urging that he should have checked his facts.

As a response, Sammut presented a table that confirms that the interconnector was overloaded due to the tanker being disconnected.

Based on the table, Sammut also presented a series of questions to Minister Dalli. The Minister did not provide an answer.

“The table confirms, with the interconnector rated at 200/225 MW, that not only was the island using it but it was also overloaded across a period of time,” he said.

“So I’ve asked the Minister if this for her signifies overloading, whether she can confirm that the tanker was taken out at sea during the storm, and how much energy Malta used from the tanker from Thursday to Sunday, but she didn’t answer any of these questions.”

“She didn’t answer any of them, because she knows that I’m right and that the energy investment they’re so proud of is only good for sunny days,” he continued.

Describing it as a “power station that only works in good weather”, Sammut blamed a lack of investment in infrastructure and the electrical network, particularly when one considers the population increase.

Sammut also uploaded proof that the tanker was taken out to Marsaxlokk for shelter during the storm, detailing that workers wrestled tirelessly against horrible weather conditions for three hours to successfully disconnect the tanker.
