PN Propose Desirei Grech As B’kara Mayor With Kaylocke Buhagiar As Vice Mayor
The Nationalist Party is campaigning for Desirei Grech to become the next mayor of Birkirkara and have even extended an olive branch to independent councillor Kaylocke Buhagiar by offering him the role of vice-mayor.
Grech, a notary, journalist, and singer, was the PN’s most popular Birkirkara candidate at last month’s election, winning 1,802 first-count votes. However, although the PN won 47.51% of the vote in Birkirkara, well ahead of the PL’s 41.66%, Grech’s future as mayor is not assured due to the presence of Buhagiar, who has emerged as a wild card.
Both PL and PN won six seats each, but Buhagiar, a former PL councillor, won the 13th seat.
During a council meeting last night, PN councillors presented a motion for Grech to become mayor, while PL councillors presented a motion for the mayorship to go to their most popular councillor, Yana Borg Debono Grech.
However, both motions failed as PL councillors voted against Grech, PN councillors voted against Borg Debono Grech, and Buhagiar voted against both of them.
Buhagiar is seeking to become mayor himself and believes a solution can be found. However, the rules don’t allow councillors to nominate themselves as mayor, meaning he would need a PL or PN councillor to propose him for the top job.
PN and PL councillors have both offered Buhagiar the vice mayor position but he has turned down their offer so far, in the hope that he can land the mayor job.
Another council meeting will take place next week.
