PN Resignation: Jean Pierre Debono Steps Down As Party’s Chief Political Coordinator

Jean Pierre Debono has resigned from his post as the Nationalist Party’s chief political coordinator.

Debono, a key ally of leader Adrian Delia, said he will be leaving the role to focus on a “new job in the private sector”, and his general election candidature on the seventh district.

Announcing his resignation in a post on facebook, Debono reiterated his loyalty to the leader, who still faces doubts despite winning a leadership challenge.

Debono gave up his seat in parliament for Delia, who was elected to the party’s leadership without getting elected into parliament.

Last June, his co-option into parliament following David Stellini’s resignation was mired in controversy after further exposing party infighting, with him eventually stepping down to make way from Kevin Cutajar.

Debono has been part of the PN since 1998, slowly rising up the ranks. However, he fell under significant pressure after the devastating drubbing of the PN in the European and Local Council elections last May.
