PN’s Equality Forum Head Calls Out ‘Selective Morality’ Of Some Politicians Who Attended Pro-Life Protest
The head of the Nationalist Party’s equality forum (FOIPN) has challenged the morality of politicians who attended yesterday’s massive pro-life protest in Valletta.
“A sizable crowd gathered in Valletta yesterday to protest against the introduction of abortion and affirm (what in their view is) a ‘pro-life’ message,” Jamie Vella said.
“Very well – freedom of assembly is essential to a democracy, even when one disagrees with the message.”
“However, I couldn’t help but notice that from the many political and public figures in attendance yesterday, many (not all) are regularly noticeably absent at the annual Pride March which celebrates love, equality and diversity. “
“Or at any vigils held in solidarity with the men, women and children who are regularly left to drown in our waters.”
“Or at any anti-racism / BLM protests demanding an end to systematic and cultural racism.”
“If being ‘pro- life’ means having a selective morality on which lives to protect and which to ignore, then a deep soul-searching exercise is highly recommended in order to understand the wholeness of what life should mean.”
Vella later clarified that he wasn’t referring to every politician who attended the protest.
“I applaud those who attended yesterday’s march and are consistent in their beliefs that the protection of life and human dignity should cover a wide spectrum of identities, circumstances and stages,” he said.
Vella has long been an advocate of relaxing Malta’s abortion laws, which are among the strictest in the world.
However, the PN has opposed a bill that would allow doctors to terminate pregnancies if the mother’s life or health is risk, warning it risks introducing abortion by health.
A large PN contingent, led by Opposition Leader Bernard Grech, attended yesterday’s protest.
