Police Complaints Board To Investigate ‘Insinuations’ Linked To Christian Borg Acquittal

Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà said he has asked the Police Complaints Board to investigate unspecified insinuations regarding the recent acquittal of Christian Borg in a perjury case.

“The Commissioner of Police has requested the Independent Police Complaints Board to look into insinuations made,” the police told MaltaToday, without clarifying what the insinuations were.

The police also plan to appeal Magistrate Astrid May Grima’s decision to acquit Borg on the grounds that the police had failed to present the transcript of Borg’s court testimony in which the alleged perjury took place.

PN MP Karol Aquilina said he managed to obtain the transcript within 12 minutes after he requested a copy from the Court Registry.

Although the perjury case against Borg was prosecuted by Inspector Gabriel Micallef, the Nationalist Party is pinning the blame on Gafà.

The PN reacted to Gafà’s announcement by accusing him of trying to wash his hands of the matter.

“For the Partit Nazzjonalista, it is clear that this move by Commissioner Gafà is a desperate attempt to save his own skin by shifting responsibility onto others,” the party said.

The Partit Nazzjonalista is informed that the Police Inspector on whom Gafà is trying to pin all the blame had previously been investigated for attempting a cover-up intended to protect Labour Party politicians and their close associates.”

“In 2017, this same Inspector was dismissed from the Force following a decision by the Public Service Commission in connection with a separate case. The inspector whom Gafà is now trying to use as a scapegoat was reinstated into the Force at a time when Angelo Gafà himself held administrative responsibility for the force as its Chief Executive.”

”The Partit Nazzjonalista also notes that Commissioner Gafà did not request for this case to be investigated by a Magistrate through a Magisterial Inquiry. This is yet another clear indication that Gafà does not want the whole truth about this case to emerge. There is only one explanation for Gafà’s actions: he fears that a proper investigation could lead to criminal charges being filed in court, and could even implicate him personally.”
