Police Officers Need Higher Salaries To Reverse Human Resource Shortage, PN MP Urges

Nationalist MP Alex Borg has called for police officers to be granted higher salaries, warning that people are suffering as a result of human resource shortages within the force.

“The lack of security in Gozo is a serious problem that people face everyday,” Borg told Parliament this week. “The blame doesn’t lie with police officers themselves but those who are responsible for allocating human and financial resources.”

“Summer has started, the Gozitan population will probably double, and yet police resources haven’t increased. What are we going to do? Are we going to keep squeezing the police’s resources or will we keep telling people that the police doesn’t have enough staff?”

In particular, Borg flagged the miserly police presence in the popular tourist resorts of Marsalforn, Xlendi and Mġarr, as well as Comino, which doesn’t have a single officer stationed there in the hours between 9pm and 8:30am.

“There needs to be a general improvement in the police force’s conditions, especially their salaries, to encourage more skilled people to choose it as a career. Citizens are suffering as a result of this shortage of human resources as they aren’t always receiving the adequate protection.”
