Police have spoken to an Occupy Justice activist and an 81-year-old man in an attempt to get to the bottom of what caused the elderly man to get injured outside the Great Siege Monument yesterday.

The man, a Valletta resident, had approached a group of activists to condemn them for laying flowers and candles in honour of slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia at the foot of the monument. Shortly afterwards, he was rushed to hospital with grievous injuries after somehow ending up on the floor. Although he is still in hospital as of the time of writing, he is no longer in intensive care and was in a fit enough state of mind to speak to police.

Labour MP Silvio Parnis, who was in the vicinity, told ONE News that an Occupy Justice activist had pushed the elderly man onto the floor. However, activists insist he had slipped after trying to snatch the mobile phone out of one of their hands due to concern he was being filmed.

Mobile phone footage of the elderly man

Mobile phone footage taken by one of the Occupy Justice activists shows the elderly man trying to stop her from filming him, prompting lawyer Andrew Borg Cardona to step in and repeatedly warn him not to lay his hand on her. The elderly man then asks the activist why she is filming him, to which the activist responds that she is doing so because he was being aggressive.

“Aggressive? As if!” the old man responds, right before swiping at the mobile phone, spitting at the activists and walking away as Borg Cardona mocks him as a ħamallu.

The contentious altercation didn’t occur with the activist who had caught the elderly man on camera, but with another Occupy Justice activist who allegedly followed him after he continued insulting them.

According to the activists, the elderly man thought the woman was filming him after spotting her phone in her hand. He then grabbed her by the arm in an attempt to snatch her phone, stumbled backwards, slipped and fell on his back.
