Police Union Lambasts ‘Substandard Work Environments’ After Sharing ‘Horror House’ Footage Of St Julian’s Police Station

The Malta Police Union sounded the alarm over the “substandard work environments” that have left police working in “horror houses”.

Footage sent to Lovin Malta by the Union has shown concerning footage of St. Julian’s police station. Broken or missing soffit tiles on the ceiling, loosely hanging wires, stained floor tiles, cracked walls, and even wrecked furniture. It can all be seen in the photos below.

“Our officers feel ashamed to provide their services in these buildings,” they wrote, lamenting current initiatives to improve the situation. Initiatives that have “led nowhere except to policies that brought chaos to the whole department.”

“Imagine our officers having to spend 12 hours in this type of environment. The little motivation an officer may have left will surely vanish.”

The Union’s executive committee called for authorities to survey the situation and action change on the environment they are forced to dwell in throughout their day.

“The usual paint, desks, computers, and posters with attractive slogans will not do. Our stations must be fully equipped – and should even include changing rooms and staff rooms.”

Lovin Malta recently reported on the “degrading state” of the Ħamrun Police Station after one troubled police officer shared similar images of his department.

The images revealed run-down toilets, broken windows, moldy walls – and even dishcloths replacing door knobs.

Objective eight of the Malta Police Transformation Strategy – a newly launched five-year strategy for modernising the force– emphasised that police officers’ work environment is not being prioritised enough.

This objective states that:

The quality of the environment and work experience of all personnel are of great importance, and these will be improved through an upgraded and well-maintained working environment. The aim is to enable a positive employee experience thereby supporting a higher quality service being offered to the public. Personnel within the Police organisation will be provided with the right facilities, tools, and support necessary to deliver the best service possible to the community. These improvements are to include maintenance, upgrades to the office furniture, cleaning of workspace, basic commodities for staff, and the required tools.
