Political Push Ups, Very Extra Censorship And Standard Tribalism: Malta’s Freshers’ Week Was A Ride

Freshers’ week at University of Malta has always been a perfect opportunity for SDM and Pulse to kidnap you forever I mean for you to get your bearings around your new and lovely University in an exciting and electric atmosphere.

And this year’s Freshers’ week didn’t disappoint, with controversies and quirky moments aplenty to make sure University of Malta’s newest students know exactly where they are – their new dysfunctional home.

1. Leader of the Opposition Adrian Delia took the time to show just how Malta’s highest educational organisation truly appreciates brains… by showing off his brawn.

For reasons that will never be clear enough to us, Adrian Delia hit the ground and started doing 10 push-ups at the Bay Stage.

With people crowding around him to get a closer look at the rare scene developing before them, Delia didn’t disappoint and literally flexed all over a bunch of teenagers.

2. Two bonehead security officers put their foot in it on the very first day when they decided to stop students from wearing masks.

Malta’s biggest pressure group, Moviment Graffitti – known for their controversial and eye-catching stunts – must have thought Christmas came early when security told one of their members to remove a mask they were wearing. Last time there was majorly unneeded censorship on campus, protests had erupted in the country’s capital.

But this time, in a cruel twist of fate, everyone stepped in to condemn the act for what it was before it spiralled out of control.

The person who the mask in question was taunting – Transport Minister Ian Borg – said he was totally chill with it… before Prime Minister Joseph Muscat called the move “stupid” and the Rector of the University said the incident should never have happened.

And with everyone in agreement on how silly those two men were to lose it over pieces of paper on a students face, Malta moved on, kinda.

3. Most importantly though, Pulse and SDM were able to induct many a new disciple.

I mean, what would Freshers’ Week even be without selling your soul for like, a pen or something, right?
