A priest is facing allegations of stealing a saintly relic from a church in Senglea.

According to a report by the Times of Malta, Father Andrew Borg is facing a police investigation over claims that he stole a relic of St Philip Neri, a silk beret.

Borg has been put on administrative leave pending investigations.

The beret has been displayed at the Porto Salvo church in Senglea since the early 1990s and believers believe it belonged to the 16th-century saint.

Borg allegedly left a Saturday service with the beret, in its box. However, an individual realised it was missing and alerted church authorities.

It was found inside Borg’s car. It remains to be seen if Borg will be charged.
